Creating a Covenant for Your Chapter

A covenant is a sacred promise for how your chapter and congregation will be in relationship with one another. It is a promise. Something all can count on to keep the relationship between chapter and congregation healthy and in right relations with one another.

Here are some resources for writing Covenants:

Covenant is Foundational to Congregational Polity

"Covenant is the silk that joins Unitarian Universalist (UU) congregations, communities, and individuals together in a web of interconnection. The practice of promising to walk together is the precious core of our creedless faith.

“Covenant” is both a noun and a verb. It can be a written agreement among individual community members promising to behave in certain ways, and it can mean to engage in mutual promises with Spirit, with other people and communities."

Writing a Covenant Workshop

This is an outline for creating a session with everyone who is in your chapter and the congregational leadership to work out the covenant together.

Covenant of Right Relations

From the website:
Congregational Covenants can take many forms and reflect the needs and best wishes of a variety of groups—from church committee members to staff groups to how members of an entire congregation agree to conduct themselves with one another. Creating and agreeing to a covenant can be an extremely effective tool for setting guidelines and building trust.
Developing a covenant can be a useful method for addressing disruptive behavior. Sample covenants are provided to help guide and inspire you.
